Embrace diversity, accept others, and courageously be yourself!

Shiloh and Dande the Lion is an imaginative story that explores diversity, tolerance, and empowerment through the fantastic dream of a young boy. Shiloh, whose name means peace, is bullied at a new school for the color of his skin. After talking to his mom about it, Shiloh discovers a dandelion in his backyard. He makes a wish, goes to sleep, and Dande the Lion comes to life! Unexpected adventures await Shiloh, as he meets unlikely creatures that share their magical experiences, to help him gain courage, confidence and overcome adversity.

This beautiful 62-page picture book, is best suited for ages 5-10. It is a great resource and conversation starter, for any parent, teacher, and/or counselor looking for a book filled with symbolism to help children understand the value of:

Discussion question #1

Ask open-ended questions throughout the story, “how do you think you might feel if the other kids told you that you were different or didn’t belong?” What are some positive ways that you could respond?

Discussion question #2

Ask your child/student why they think the other children teased Shiloh based on his “skin color?” Make this a teachable moment to talk about race and acceptance. This is not easy, but it’s necessary.

Discussion question #3

Make predictions and real-world connections that are relatable. For example, when Shiloh goes to sleep, what do you think he will dream about? Have you ever had a dream before?
