BLACKISH, COON, OREO, D’ANDRE WELCOMES ALL THE NAMES, BUT A QUESTION STILL BUZZES IN THE BACK OF HIS MIND—WILL IT BUY HIM ANY FREEDOM ?

Guidelines for Southern Black Boys is a chapbook about the obligation on Black boys to live up to the stereotype of a Black male and what happens they don’t live up to it.

Rejected by older black boys for not being “black enough”, D’Andre tries to blend in with his white friends and he learns what it means to be “white.”

At home he faces a wise, but abusive father and a saintly mother with a shopping addiction.

Driven by the pain of rejection, D’Andre embraces white culture. He learns that white people’s acceptance comes not without a cost.

Tired of witnessing his father abuse, he enlists in the military and gets assigned to the Pacific Northwest, far away from his southern roots. As he struggles to adapt to military life, D’Andre wonders if he’ll find what all Black people are still searching for—freedom.

Guidelines for Southern Black Boys unravels the pressure on Black boys to fulfill the stereotype and how far some will go to avoid it.

With a list of ten “guidelines” or insights, D’Andre transports us into his coming-of-age experience as a Black boy in the Rural South where the air is thick with racial tensions.

Fans of Black Lives Matter books, The Hill We Climb by Amanda Gorman, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, Dear Martin by Nic Stone, and The Poet Xby Elizabeth Acevedo will love this non-fiction look at life as a black boy in the Rural South.
