This Spring 1994 Line of Omega Psi Phi from Hampton University Traveled to Ghana and Donated 100 Chromebooks to Local School

In July, nine members of the Spring 1994 line of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity’s Gamma Epsilon Chapter at Hampton University embarked on a journey to Accra, Ghana. Marking the 30th anniversary of their crossing, the trip celebrated their enduring bond and a shared commitment to giving back. Accompanied by their pledge dean and assistant dean, the group donated 100 Chromebooks to the New Legon International School, a transformative gift for a school that previously had only four functional computers for 300 students.

Todd Inman shared with Hampton University’s Office of Alumni Affairs how the idea was conceived during the COVID-19 pandemic. “The Lord inspired me to tell the Bruhs that we should take one big trip with each other during our lifetime,” he said. “Since we are all healthy and present, let’s make the 30th anniversary our big trip.” The brothers embraced the vision and spent three years planning the experience.

The line partnered with the Tau Chi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity in Ghana to coordinate logistics. Tau Chi’s support facilitated a community service event at the New Legion International School, where the brothers engaged with students and teachers about health, mental wellness, and education. Their financial donation enabled the school to purchase desks and paint to improve its interior.

According to the article by Hampton University’s Office of Alumni Affairs, Anthony Smith, an assistant principal in Virginia, facilitated the donation of the Chromebooks. “To witness the children show appreciation for our gift brought joy to our hearts,” they quoted him saying. “We hope that these Chromebooks will help prepare the students with the necessary tools to compete in the digital global society.”

“Ghana was a trip that satisfied the soul,” Rick Grimes told Hampton University’s Office of Alumni Affairs. “All elements of our fraternity, ancestry, and spirituality were aligned.” Their journey highlighted the transformative impact of collective action, showing that the bonds formed at Hampton University can transcend borders and leave an indelible mark on the world.
