Happy New Year! The Perfect Year, from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Don Black’s musical Sunset Boulevard, is sung by the half-deranged Norma Desmond to her young protegee Joe, who she has fallen in love with.

I have been fortunate enough to see several fantastic greats playing the role of the crazed, has-been silent movie star Norma Desmond including Betty Buckley, Patti luPone and Glenn Close and think it is one of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s best scores.

I roped in my lovely John for this one, who took his role as the reluctant Joe very seriously – he read that Norma ends up shooting him so it was hard for me to make him smile back at me! Thanks for being such a great sport John. And, in case you’re wondering, I’m 6ft tall in high heels so that gives you an idea how tall he is!

I truly hope that 2021 will be, if not a perfect year, then at least a much better one than this past one for us all.
