Education for African Americans has always been a struggle to obtain. During the 18th and 19th century slaves weren’t allowed to read or write. After Reconstruction African Americans took charge of their education, but when southern democrats took control of the south black education suffered. In 1740 South Carolina put forth a law that would prohibit slaves from writing or be taught how to write. African American scholar, Dr. Heather Williams reads the 1740 law.
