Steve Harvey Talks About Owing More Than $20M To The IRS: ‘They Were Cashing The Checks, Keeping The Money’
Steve Harvey is one of the most well known comedians, TV hosts and men in entertainment in 2022. During an interview, on Earn Your Leisure podcast, he recalled how he got into some trouble with the IRS for about $20 million.
“My accountant died, and an accountant that worked for him called my lawyer and said, ‘we have a problem,’” he said in the interview. “She had found on the floor all my tax forms for 7 years, signed with the checks stapled to them.”
Harvey said, “They were cashing the checks, keeping the money, and not turning in the tax forms…. They didn’t cash it, they took the money out [of] the account that matched the exact number. ”
Steve Harvey added:
“My old tax accountant, who passed, had done some, let’s say, not so smart things. And since he’s not alive anymore, and I don’t slam people who are gone, so let’s just say some bad things were done and I looked up and I was in a lot of trouble to the tune of almost $25 million.”
This all took place when Harvey first married his wife, Marjorie. He was concerned he would loose everything including his wife. However, she was understating of the situation according to Yahoo.
“I sat my wife down and she cried and I held her and I told her it was going to be all right; I was going to get us out,” he said.
Then with a lot of work, Harvey was able to recover.
“I just went to work. I took every gig and every contract and I worked and worked. I hung in there and I had a big deal come through in 2012 and I got free. And it’s been OK ever since,” he said.
