Should Black Actors Play Traditionally White Roles?
Hollywood and early television has had a terrible history of racism and ethnic stereotyping. Things began to change in the late 50s 60s and 70’s with respectable writing for black actors like Sidney Poitier, Cicely Tyson.
We had Shaft, Foxy Brown, and The Cosby Show. However it still has taken decades to equal the playing fields for diverse ethnic groups in general. Lately instead of writing strong new roles for minorities, there is a move to replace traditionally, and historically white roles to black ones. Does it matter to make a historical character black when they clearly were not. Does it matter when we change fictional characters to relate to different groups. Is this even an issue or is it much to do about nothing?
