In a recent interview of the USA talk show of Stephen Colbert, 23 times Grand Slam winner Serena Williams talked about many things, including her future and her goals. Above all, Serena has declared that her next goal is to play only for the Grand Slam events.

She said: “I really play for Grand Slams right now. I love still having the opportunity to be out here and be able to compete at this level. It’s an opportunity anytime I win a Grand Slam it means the world to me.”

Serena opens 2021 at the Yarra Valley Classic, where she is seeded No. 5: after the bye on her debut, she gets her first win of the year against Darja Gavrilova, while in the round of 16 she finds Cvetana Pironkova , which he had also faced in the quarter-finals of the last US Open, winning two comfortable halves (6-1 6-4).

Serena Williams entered her 9th semifinal in the Australian major, where she crosses paths with Naomi Osaka. For the third time out of four, Serena is defeated by the Japanese, this time with the score of 3-6 4-6. The Australian Grand Slam will prove to be the last tennis event for the American, who takes a break.

After a break of about three months, Serena returns to the field at the Internazionali in Rome, where she plays the thousandth match of her career, meeting Argentine Nadia Podoroska in the first round and being defeated 6-7 5-7.

Later she disputes the Emilia Romagna Open, where she is credited as seeded number one: she ousts the young Italian Lisa Pigato 6-3 6-2 in the first round, but then she is surprised by Kateřina Siniaková, who eliminates her for 7-6 6-2.

She then reaches the second Slam of the season, the French Open, where she gets rid of the Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu for 7-6 6-2 and Mihaela Buzărnescu for 6-3 5-7 6-1. In the third round, Serena wins the derby with Danielle Collins with a double 6-4, reaching the second round.

Where she crosses the racket with Elena Rybakina, never faced before her and against which she loses 3-6 5-7. In the third Slam of the season, Wimbledon, Serena is forced to retire in tears, in the first round against Sasnovič, due to a thigh injury. At the end of the tournament she slips to position 16 in the world rankings.
