Security At Popular D.C. Club Drag 22-Year-Old DC Woman By Her Hair Down Flight Of Stairs
Nee Nee Taylor, a co-conductor with local Black-led abolitionist group Harriet’s Dreams, helped Young gather her belongings following the incident, The Washington City Paper reports. Taylor said she asked a bar employee if they could set up a meeting between Young and the bar’s owner, Douglas Schantz. The owner was not present at Nellie’s at the time and did not indicate any plans to visit at the woman’s request.
Protesters later took their demonstrations to Schantz’s home.
“The owner of Nellie’s don’t care enough about Black people to come and make sure that his Black patron, who is Keisha, was safe and OK,” Taylor said. “So we ask the people to protest and boycott Nellie’s because the owner, who is a White man, don’t care about Black women. If he cared, he would come out here and be concerned about what security done to a Black woman in his club.”
During conversations with a number of Nellie’s workers on Sunday, Taylor says one security guard told her that they are taught to remove rude patrons the best way they can.
Following the incident, Nellie’s released a statement on social media as the protests picked up.
“We were incredibly upset and disturbed to see the unfortunate event that took place at Nellie’s last night. We are undergoing a full investigation of the situation. At Nellie’s, we foster an inclusive and safe environment, so events like this are completely unacceptable to us,” bar officials wrote on Instagram.
