Leadership Highlight: University of Colorado at Colorado Springs’ SGA President Axel Brown

In an effort to highlight the people who are leading colleges and universities across the nation, we at Watch The Yard reached out to University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and did an interview with Axel Brown the 2022-2023 Student Government Association president.

The position of SGA president is a highly respected role and there is a special pride that one takes in being elected by their peers to lead. Brown, who is majoring in social work, is from New York City. He is a proud Fall 2021 initiate of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

We interviewed Axel Brown, and talked to him about his position, goals, future and what it means to hold this type of leadership position in 2022-2023.

Read the full interview below.

What is the biggest thing you’ve learned as an SGA president so far?

It’s hard to implement the ideas you have right away. Of course you would like to change the campus’ culture but it takes time.

What made you decide to attend University of Colorado at Colorado Springs for undergrad?

I decided to attend UCCS after fulfilling my commitment to the United States Army. I found out that they were developing a social work program and wanted to become a part of the community.

How has UCCS molded you into the person you are today?

UCCS has helped me become a more professional man. The school ensures to never stop providing me opportunities to succeed.

What specific initiatives have you headed up this year (or are planning) and how do you think they will improve the school and surrounding community?

I want to change the structure of our student government.

I want to bring number of student engagement up.

I want to bring more inclusive artists to my campus.

How is your SGA administration/school currently working on attending to the mental health of students?

The university is doing an okay job at attending mental health. Currently my Vice President and I are working on bringing in mental health speakers to campus.

What does leadership mean to you?

Leadership to me means that people look up to you if you’re being a good leader, that means you’re setting examples for those behind you to either walk in your shoes or be better than you

We now live in a digital world, what do you think schools need to do to represent themselves online in 2022/2023?

Use more of the diversity campus to promote themselves and their “problems” will solve themselves.

Why do you think Watch The Yard is important to Black students and college culture?

Watch The Yard is important to Black students in college because it shows what is going on around other campuses. Also, it gives Black students a sense of belonging.

What do you plan on doing after graduation?

I plan to attend graduate school for my masters in social work.

We at Watch The Yard would like to commend Axel Brown for his work as the SGA president of University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.
