In an effort to highlight the people who are leading colleges and universities across the nation, we at Watch The Yard reached out to Kentucky State University and did an interview with Savion Malik Briggs the 2022-2023 Student Government Association president.

The position of SGA president is a highly respected role and there is a special pride that one takes in being elected by their peers to lead. Briggs, who is majoring in Political Science, is from Louisville, KY.

We interviewed Savion Briggs, and talked to him about his position, goals, future and what it means to hold this type of leadership position in 2022-2023.

What is the biggest thing you’ve learned as an SGA president so far?

The biggest thing I learned as SGA president is the importance of trust and teamwork. As SGA President, there are a lot of tasks that you have handle so the most important thing to do is to delegate.

What made you decide to attend Kentucky State University for undergrad?

The reason why I attend Kentucky State University is because it is the first HBCU to be founded in Kentucky and had strong roots in the civil rights area in Louisville.

How has Kentucky State University molded you into the person you are today?

Kentucky State University molded me into an unbroken individual, since I stepped foot on this campus, it showed me what true Black excellence looks like. It help me find my true purpose in what leadership really is.

How is your SGA administration/school currently working on attending to the mental health of students?

The mental health of the students at Kentucky State University is our SGA’s number one priority. We have yoga classes, mental health talks, one on one conversations.

What does leadership mean to you?

What leadership to means to me is guiding people in the right direction without expecting anything from it.

We now live in a digital world, what do you think schools need to do to represent themselves online in 2022/2023?

Schools need to do a better job promoting the great things that students have going on at their institutions and also do a better job recruiting on a digital level for high school students.

Why do you think Watch The Yard is important to Black students and college culture?

Watch The Yard is very important to college students because they have everything they need at their fingertips. They can stay up-to-date with what’s going on at HBCUs, Greek life and so much more.

What do you plan on doing after graduation?

After graduation, I plan on attending grad school and starting up my own nonprofit to impact Black youth in my Louisville community. I also plan on working in diversity and inclusion for institutions.
