Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum has redefined NBA contract history by signing a monumental 5-year extension worth $314 million, establishing him as the league’s highest-paid player.

Shamas Charania of the Athletic and Stadium broke the news on X, formerly known as Twitter. Sources familiar with the situation told the outlet that Tatum’s five-year deal is the maximum contract extension through the 2029-2030 season.

Shooting guard Jaylen Brown held the title as the highest-paid NBA player when he signed a $285 million deal with the Celtics heading into the 2023-2024 season. According to Complex, fellow teammate, two-guard Derek White inked a four-year $125.9 million extension, cementing the team’s starting five that led to the franchise’s 18th NBA title.

X users shared their thoughts on the news, with many referring to Tatum as an “overpaid” player who didn’t deserve that much money in the deal.

“role players are getting crazy money this offseason,” one user said.

“Overpay. He didn’t even win Finals MVP,” another wrote.

Other observers were taken aback by the substantial payouts for Tatum, Brown and White, questioning how the Celtics managed to afford them.

“How tf they got money for all this????,” one user tweeted.

“Jaylen Brown: 5 years 285 million Jayson Tatum: 5 years 314 million Derrick White: 4 years 126 million Jrue Holiday: 4 years 135 million where tf they getting this money from?” another wrote.

According to ESPN, the Celtics ownership group announced Monday that they plan to sell a “majority interest’ in the team either this year or early next year. The decision comes after the NBA franchises’ valuations have increased, leading group owner Wyc Grousbeck and partner Steve Pagliuca to make a move after purchasing the team in 2002 at $360 million.

Multiple players are under long-term contracts with high-paying extensions over the next few seasons.
