"I Dreamed a Dream" Black History Month Tribute Performed by SGM Rheams
When Aretha Franklin passed away last August, our own Sgt. Major Christal Rheams felt the loss deeply. She wanted to honor the Queen of Soul through music, showing what Aretha’s presence in our world meant to so many people.
“I Dreamed a Dream” originally composed for the musical “Les Miserables” is a lament, but with a hopeful end. In 1991, Aretha recorded her own version of the song on her album “What You See is What You Sweat.” Sgt. Major Rheams heard the Franklin version at the Inauguration of Bill Clinton and was moved by Franklin’s liberties with the lyrics:
“She took the words, and she changed them into another soulful and emotional thing that was so important at the time because there was such a divide between white and black America.”
