Eugenics in the United States: Sterilizations That Erased Lives #hiddenhistory #medicalapartheid

From 1907 to the 1970s, over 60,000 people were sterilized under U.S. eugenics laws. But the burden wasn’t equal. Disabled women, especially those who were poor, were singled out. Black women in the South, Native women on reservations, and Latina women in cities like Los Angeles were targeted disproportionately.

Eugenics treated poverty as a defect, race as a threat, and gender as destiny. Doctors justified it as science, politicians called it progress, and families were told it was for society’s good. In reality, it was medical violence that cut futures short.

One often-overlooked detail: in Puerto Rico, mass sterilization campaigns were carried out alongside birth control experiments, leaving nearly one-third of women sterilized by the mid-20th century—the highest rate in the world.
