Black History : Teaching beyond slavery
Black boys are failing school at an alarming rate. Statesmen College Preparatory Academy for Boys in Washington, D.C., is tackling that problem by hiring black male teachers and and centering the curriculum around black history.
For black and brown students, the first time they see someone who looks like them in a history book is a man in chains. Statesmen’s black history curriculum wants to make sure they get a better first image of their place in history.
