The sorority sisters of Alpha Kappa Alpha announced today that they will be providing mammograms to caregivers in the Navajo Nation.

As part of Caregivers’ Impact Day, Alpha Kappa Alpha will serve the residents of the Navajo Nation in Arizona on November 19th and 20th. “We will provide a free 3D mammogram to caregivers and a free caregiver bag filled with stress-reduction gifts and a COVID-19 safety kit,” the sorority stated in a social media post posted to their official Instagram account.

“Two out of every three caregivers in the United States are women, meaning they provide daily or regular support to children, adults, or people with chronic illnesses and disabilities,” the sorority stated. “Women who are caregivers have a greater risk for poor physical and mental health, including depression and anxiety. The COVID-19 pandemic can add even more stress to the caregiver. AKA is so very proud to have secured a partnership in the Navajo Nation to provide free mammograms”

The Navajo Nation is a Native American territory covering about 17,544,500 acres throughout Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico. It is the largest land area retained by a Native American tribe in the United States.

The two-day event will be held on November 19 and 20 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Chinle Comprehensive Health Care Facility, US Highway 191, Hospital Drive, in Chinle, AZ.
