Alpha Kappa Alpha Just Raised Over $2.1 Million for HBCUs in 24 Hours

The sorority sisters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. announced today that they have raised over $2 million for HBCUs through their national HBCU Impact Day.

The fundraiser, which is currently in its fourth year, took place on September 20, 2021 and is a part of the sorority’s four-year $10 million fundraising goal.

For the challenge, the AKAs encouraged their more than 300,000 members as well as corporate partners and donors to contribute funds to assist with the sustainability and scholarships at the more than 100 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) around the country.

The sorority took to social media on Wednesday to announce that they had raised a total of $2,101450 through this year’s fundraiser.

Last year, the sorority was able to raise $1.3 million and this year’s total greatly exceeds that.

“I know first-hand the immense challenges HBCUs are facing during this time of uncertainty,” AKA International President and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Glenda Glover stated last year. “However, I also know that these institutions are resilient and resourceful, which is why I have implored the membership of AKA and the black community to remain steadfast in our support of HBCUs which are responsible for 22% of current bachelor’s degrees granted to African Americans, preparing them for a myriad of key leadership roles in society.”

Although HBCU Impact Day has passed, individuals or organizations interested in supporting the effort can still make contributions online by going to http://aka1908.com/hbcus/donate-hbcu.
