Bowie State University Names Performance Theater After Dionne Warwick

On Saturday, Bowie State University honored the legendary artist Dionne Warwick by naming its performing arts facility after her.

The Dionne Warwick Theater will host concerts, plays, and other performances on the Bowie State campus. The six-time Grammy Award-winning singer said this gift is one of the biggest honors in her career.

“It’s wonderful to know that I have reached a level that I am being appreciated for the work that I have put in, the time I’ve put in. I’ve earned it,” Warwick said.

Warwick has her share of accolades and honors, including the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Grammy Hall of Fame, R&B Music Hall of Fame, and Apollo Theater Walk of Games — but this is the first theater named after her.

Although Warwick is a New Jersey native and attended college in Connecticut, she is closely related to Bowie State students and staff.

“Just conversations, speaking to students and instructors as well, as to what their concerns were and, did they think I could be of some kind of service to them, and I feel I can,” Warwick said.

Warwick was celebrated with a beautiful ceremony curated by Bowie State University. The event featured musical performances, the unveiling of the theater sign, speeches, dance performances, and music.
