On the eighteenth of February, I was invited to attend Emory University’s Black History Month soiree. There were drinks, music and food. Many people of different backgrounds came out to support the event, and there were also many people of other majors outside of the medical field in attendance. It was a great experience and an outstanding example of staff and students coming together to take action and create something memorable and impactful.

Students and the head of the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion for Graduate Medical Education department curated the event. They kicked off the night with speeches from the students and staff hosting the soiree. They also had a game of bingo with a twist that was an icebreaker. It was very creative, everyone was engaged and it charged the energy in the room. They followed with a beautiful song sung by one of the students. Her voice filled the air and soothed our ears. The melody commanded us to our feet as we all sang along to the black national anthem.

The floor was then opened to mingle and indulge in the delicious platters laid before us. Connecting with peers of similar interests and within my age range was nice. But talking to those a bit older and more seasoned from backgrounds beyond the medical field was also interesting. Some in attendance were slated to be lawyers, accountants and business moguls. The celebration ended with a congratulatory ceremony in honor of some veteran staff and students. We all clapped as they graciously received their flowers and made way for their peers. In the end, they also revealed the information so anyone interested could give back and donate to their department so that they may continue to curate more exciting events such as this one.

Attendees dawned gorgeous gowns and perfectly tailored suits. The entire room was flooded with contrasting colors that expertly complimented each other. Being in a room of brilliant minds with features that favored my own was unique and inspiring. I hope to have the pleasure of attending the next one.
