(BPRW) Black History Month: Honoring Iota Phi Theta and the African American Community

Iota Phi Theta’s History

On September 19th, 1963, twelve students at Morgan State College (now Morgan State University) founded Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated, a member of the Divine 9 National Pan-Hellenic Council organizations. The honorable founders of Iota Phi Theta were Albert Hicks, Lonnie Spruill Jr., Charles Briscoe, Frank Coakley, John Slade, Barron Willis, Webster Lewis, Charles Brown, Louis Hudnell, Charles Gregory, Elias Dorsey Jr., and Michael Williams. With their heightened responsibilities and mature perspectives, this group of students established the fraternity’s purpose: “The development and perpetuation of Scholarship, Leadership, Citizenship, Fidelity, and Brotherhood among Men.”

Iota Phi Theta’s Legacy

Even as it has grown throughout the years, Iota Phi Theta has remained steadfast in its commitment to making significant contributions to society and the African-American community. The fraternity continues to embody excellence in all areas and adheres to the founders’ vision of “Building a Tradition, Not Resting Upon One.”

Today, Iota Phi Theta has grown to encompass a thriving membership of over 50,000 initiated members across 300 chapters. Through various programs and initiatives, the fraternity actively works to uplift and empower its members and the communities it serves. These efforts include academic scholarships, community service projects, and leadership development programs. The fraternity continuously seeks new and innovative ways to make a positive impact and inspire others to do the same.
