19-year-old homeless teen earns spot on Fisk University basketball team
19-year-old Jeremiah Armstead was homeless while in high school, has earned a spot on Fisk University, an HBCU in Nashville, Tennessee basketball team.
“Any type of adversity that I went through, for the most part, it motivated me and pushed me,” Armstead said after seeing his acceptance letter to the school, according to ABC News. In the past three years, Armstead has lived mostly in cars and domestic violence shelters with his mother and siblings.
“I’m not surprised Jeremiah is where he’s at today,” his mother Mindy Brooks said. “I’m not surprised because he’s always been a good person.”
Armstead says that getting into Fisk wasn’t easy for the teen while he was juggling his studies and the effects of being homeless. However, he managed to push through all the adversity he faced with the help of his family, coaches, and organizations like We Educate Brilliant Minds and Sisters of Wyatt.
“I was bringing smarts, of course, but it was hard to do that being homeless and juggling everything, like domestic violence situations, just stuff like that,” he said. “Living in a shelter, living in a car — it was hard to think, go to school, worry about my mom or my brother, my sister.”
The teen graduated from Long Beach Polytechnic High School in Long Beach, California, is now a college student studying kinesiology. He has now earned a spot on the Fisk University men’s basketball team under the head coach Kenneth Anderson, who formally played for the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers.
