"Black books don't sell" so black authors self-publish (Fine Cut)
Last year, only 9% (319 out of 3500) of published children’s books featured a black character, which is actually an increase from previous years; 5% in 2015 and 6% in 2016. Despite this growth, black authors in this category are still having great difficulty getting published (3% in 2017). As a result, some have alternatively turned to self-publishing.
