 What does happiness mean to you? I’d be lying if I said that this motherhood thing was easy, especially when I’m mostly working at home with my kids. It’s harder than I ever imagined it would be but the title of “Mom” is the best I could ever ask for. Over the years I’ve learned in order to raise happier and healthier kids, I have to be whole too. I’ve always watched other moms around me try to juggle everything. They just didn’t seem happy. Their kids weren’t happy. After losing a child, having a rainbow baby and being diagnosed with a chronic illness my family has been through so much together.

I never wanted my family to be unhappy but somewhere along the line we were.

This change caused me to take a step back and re-evaluate my priorities because I needed to figure out how to be a happier mom. I took a break from everything, except motherhood of course. I spent more time pouring into my children and finding out what made them happy. Tristan loved listening to music and cuddling. Tatiana loves reading books together, family movie nights, and of course cuddling too. Once I discovered what made them happy, I slowly noticed a change. I began to pick up their energy. 

Being a happy mom doesn’t have to be difficult. Something simple as getting more sleep could be the first step to happier days. There’s no secret sauce and happiness comes in all different forms. If you’re on the search for what it takes to be a happier mom, here’s a few ways to get you started.

1. Don’t always give in

Your kids are cute and cuddly but it’s okay to say no. Sometimes saying no means they’ll be upset or sad but trust me they’ll get over it. Learn to set boundaries with your kids especially as they get older. Keeping a family calendar helps me to keep my family organized and it lets my kids know when we have fun activities lined up.

2. Practice random acts of kindness

Have you ever practiced a random act of kindness? Nothing extreme but something simple like smiling at a stranger or paying for your coworker’s coffee? Random acts of kindness can not only make you feel better about yourself but brighten someone else’s day.

3. Make self care is a priority

Self care absolutely has to be a priority especially for moms. One thing I’ve learned over the years is Moms cannot take care of their kids if they’re not taking care of themselves. We can push through for an unbelievably long time but eventually we’ll break down, and it’s not pretty when it happens. Practice simple acts of self care like a long bath once a week.

4. Keep a gratitude list

Gratitude goes a long way. Take a few seconds every single day to write down something you’re grateful for whether it’s a tasty breakfast or no traffic on the way to school. It doesn’t matter because even the little things count.
