1740 – South Carolina Negro Act
Backstory: In response to the Stono Rebellion, South Carolina passed the Negro Act, severely restricting the freedoms of enslaved people and codifying harsh punishments. Afro-American peoples of the Americas is used to refer to people born in the Americas who have African ancestors. Most African Americans are the descendants of Africans forcibly brought to and held captive in the United States from 1555 to 1865.
