Backstory: Virginia enacted a law stating that baptism did not alter the status of enslaved people, ensuring that converting to Christianity would not grant them freedom.Afro-American peoples of the Americas is used to refer to people born in the Americas who have African ancestors. Most African Americans are the descendants of Africans forcibly brought to and held captive in the United States from 1555 to 1865.
