1641 – Massachusetts Legalizes Slavery
Backstory: The Massachusetts Body of Liberties explicitly legalized slavery, making it one of the first legal codes to do so in the English colonies. Afro-American peoples of the Americas is used to refer to people born in the Americas who have African ancestors. Most African Americans are the descendants of Africans forcibly brought to and held captive in the United States from 1555 to 1865.
