1640 – John Punch Case
Backstory: John Punch, an African servant, was sentenced to serve for life as punishment for trying to escape servitude. This case marked one of the first legal distinctions between African and European indentured servants. Afro-American peoples of the Americas is used to refer to people born in the Americas who have African ancestors. Most African Americans are the descendants of Africans forcibly brought to and held captive in the United States from 1555 to 1865.
