Woman-Owned Auto Repair Shop Gives Customers Option To Have Their Hair and Nails Done While Waiting For Their Cars
Entrepreneur Patrice Banks owns Girls Auto Clinic located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Banks noticed the issue of women getting taken advantage of at auto repair shops owned by men, so she launched her shop to give women a better experience.
Unlike traditional auto shops that rip off their female customers, the staff at Girls Auto Clinic take time to go over each step of the fixing of their vehicle with their customers. They host free monthly workshops teaching simple, straightforward lessons and tips on car maintenance according to Black Business. While waiting for their car to get serviced, there is an on-site beauty parlor where customers can get their hair and nails done while they wait for their car to be fixed.
Banks says she came up with the concept after she got ripped off at an auto repair shop. She immediately recognized what happened to her was a potential business opportunity. Banks quit her job as an engineer, took night classes to become an auto mechanic. She later opened up her own shop with other “auto gals.”
The Bureau of Labor Statistics found that there are 19,236 female auto mechanics (2.1% of all auto mechanics) and a total 130,174 women in the automotive repair and maintenance field.
