WNBA Legend Tamika Catchings Inducted As Honorary Member of Delta Sigma Theta

The 56th National Convention of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. witnessed a momentous occasion this week as WNBA legend and Olympic gold medalist Tamika Catchings was inducted into the esteemed sisterhood as an Honorary Member. The induction ceremony in Indianapolis celebrated Catchings’ extraordinary basketball career and her dedication to empowering women, reflecting Delta Sigma Theta’s commitment to recognizing exceptional individuals.

Tamika Catchings, renowned for her illustrious basketball career, has left an indelible mark on the WNBA and the world of sports. As a former forward for the Indiana Fever, Catchings spent her entire 15-year professional basketball career with the team. Her remarkable achievements on the court earned her widespread acclaim and numerous accolades.

Throughout her career, Catchings garnered numerous awards, including being named the WNBA’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 2011. She was a ten-time WNBA All-Star and was consistently recognized for her exceptional defensive skills, being named the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year five times.

However, Catchings’ accomplishments extended beyond the WNBA. As a part of the USA Women’s Basketball Team, she won four Olympic gold medals (2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016), further solidifying her status as one of the greatest athletes in the history of women’s basketball. A true leader, she served as President of the WNBA Players Association from 2012 to 2016.

She is one of only 11 women to receive an Olympic gold medal, an NCAA Championship, a Fiba World cup gold and a WNBA Championship. She was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020.

Beyond her on-court success, Tamika Catchings’ impact extended far beyond the basketball court. Known for her philanthropic efforts and dedication to making a difference in her community, she founded the Catch the Stars Foundation, empowering youth through sports and education. Her advocacy work and leadership in promoting equality and social justice have earned her widespread admiration.

As an honorary member, Tamika Catchings joins a distinguished sisterhood of trailblazing women who have made significant contributions to their respective fields. The induction represents a celebration of her leadership, sportsmanship, and commitment to social progress.

Alongside Catchings, the roster of distinguished inductees for this year’s 2023 convention include Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson; President of MSNBC, Rashida Jones; former Chairman and CEO of BET Networks, Debra Lee; Ambassador Bonnie Denise Jenkins; prominent television executive and producer, Channing Dunge; and esteemed businesswoman and technology entrepreneur, Phyllis Newhouse.

Watch The Yard would like to warmly welcome Tamika Catchings to Black greekdom.
