Video Shows White Woman Stealing Black Lives Matter Yard Sign In North Carolina
A white woman is the subject of a criminal investigation after stealing a “Black Lives Matter” sign out of another person’s front yard. The North Carolina woman theft was captured on the victim’s Ring camera found near the property’s front door. A unidentified woman trespassed on Melanie Larkey’s property stealing a sign from her front yard on March 11 according to WSOC-TV.
The woman got out of her car and walked up to the sign in the grass. Before she took the sign, she waved to the camera and got back in the car. The homeowner was in her home during the incident, but wasn’t aware it was going on at the time. She didn’t found out of the crime until she looked at her camera footage.
“Surprised and unsettled are going to be the two words I’m going to use,” Larkey said when asked about she felt about the incident. “It was really unnerving. Her abrasiveness and walking into my yard and stealing something that didn’t belong to her.”
“Then she even waved at the camera,” Larkey said. “And then made some distasteful remarks when she got back to the car she was in.”
The incident took place in the neighborhood of Starmount in south Charlotte, North Carolina, its an predominately Hispanic and white neighborhood, less than 7 % of the people that live in the area identify as African American, City-Data.com reported. Larkey thinks the sign and conversations about race shouldn’t seem provocative.
“I can’t figure out what it is about my sign that says, ‘Black Lives Matter’ is so upsetting to other people,” she said. “It has shown me, and a lot of the neighbors have mentioned it too, that we need a discussion about race.”
“Race and racial discussions in this country shouldn’t be provocative. They should be out in the open. People should be able to have a discussion about it,” Larkey concluded.
