Two Detroit Women Own The Only Mother-Daughter Orthodontics Practice In Michigan
A Metro Detroit doctors own the first mother-daughter orthodontics practice in the state according to AfroTech. Doctors Jana and Janelle McQueen own and operate McQueen Orthodontics Specialists.
Dr. Jana opened her first practice in 1998 when her daughter Janelle was just a baby. After watching her mother career path growing up Janelle decided to follow her path. Both mother and daughter are graduates of Howard University and Meharry Medical College they both graduated at the top their class. The pair own three orthodontics officers across the Metro Detroit region.
Dr. Jana spoke to reporters about the significance of operating her practices with her daughter, saying, “I didn’t ask her to do this. It just warms my heart to have her as my legacy; the comfort of knowing once I decide to retire, the practice is going to be in good hands.”
The two are working to help other women professionals navigate the industry while offering mentorship and job shadow opportunities.
“Especially the Black mothers that come in here and they’re bringing their daughters in here, they’re like, ‘Oh look at this; look, the mom and daughter are doing this; she’s a doctor, you can achieve this goal,’” Dr. Janelle said.
