The founder and owner of TCapri Tequila Tiffany Hainesworth, has made history becoming the first Black woman to solely own a tequila brand. Hainesworth worked for the federal government for almost 30 years decided to become an entrepreneur after a car accident. After the accident she wanted to do “something different, something fun.”
Hainesworth started out making gummy bears made from liquor brands, wine and other gourmet treats. Then she would made her dream of owning a tequila brand come to life.
In 2018, she began looking into the process of making tequila and eventually found a distillery in Guadalajara, Mexico according to Black Business. Although warnings to avoid the city due to high crime rates, the entrepreneur pushed through and worked together with local Mexican farmers in harvesting crops needed to produce tequila.
“It was important to me to pay homage to a product that I was producing,” she told NBC Washington 4. “I didn’t want to just slap my name on a bottle and say I have a liquor brand.”
Hainesworth tequila brand is now being sold in stores throughout Maryland, and she is hoping to make it an international brand one day.
“It makes me feel like anything is possible for women, anything is possible for minorities,” Hainesworth said. “You just have to focus, put your mind to it and stay at it.”
