‘The Wood’ May Turn Into a TV Series After Showtime Orders a Pilot Based on The Hit 90s Movie
Showtime has recently ordered a TV pilot based on the classic 1999 movie “The Wood” that starred Taye Diggs, Richard T. Jones and Omar Epps. Along with actress LisaRaye McCoy and Sanaa Lathan were also in the film’s cast. The announcement was made during the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour on Aug. 24 according to Deadline.
The original romantic comedy centered around three Black men navigate from teenager’s to adult hood, dating and life in Inglewood, Calif. As of now, there hasn’t been any informatiion about the cast for the TV version. However, it has been reported that the series will be about Black men and women born and raised in gentrifying Inglewood. The series will follow the characters through their ambitions, relationships, and friendships, per Deadline. “With a knowing nod back to the characters of the 1999 film on which it is based, this romantic comedy showcases the humor and heart of young Black men and women trying to navigate life, love and likes on the ’Gram.” An addition to the show will be social media and will show how the characters navigate life online.
The creators of the movie “The Wood” Rick Famuyiwa and Justin Hillian will create the pilot for Showtime. Famuyiwa will direct the pilot and Hillian will write the screenplay. Both men will executive producers on the project.
Hillian is also known for being a writer on “The Chi” and “Snowfall.” Hillian was nominated for a Black Reel Award his work on “Snowfall.”
Famuyiwa is known for directing “The Chi” pilot along with being a producer on the television show. Paramount Television Studios will head the production.
