Chidiebere Ibe spotted a flaw in medical training.

Ibe, a first-year medical student aspiring to be a neurosurgeon, quickly realized the lack of diversity in the skin tones used in his textbooks and medical workups. He has a passion for art and medicine, and decided to combine both of his talents to bridge the gap. He began creating illustrations on his own and sharing them on Instagram.

‘Textbooks are essentially invincible to medical training. Yet, most medical illustrations are on the Caucasian skin,’ Ibe wrote on his GoFundMe page.

His art promotes the importance of representation in science. He believes that showing darker skin tones not only helps people relate to artworks, but also promotes equality within the medical world. Ibe believes diverse illustrations will help medical professionals more accurately identify skin conditions on patients with darker skin tones.

Ibe started a GoFundMe to pay for his tuition during medical school.
