The sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff is remembered as one of the most tragic maritime disasters in history. On January 30, 1945 the Wilhelm Gustloff was struck by three torpedoes which would send the Wilhelm Gusloff to her watery grave taking with her roughly 9600 passengers and crew. Only 1252 passengers and crew were saved from the freezing water that fateful night.
