Phi Beta Sigma’s Jaylin Drewry Appointed Commissioner of Portsmouth, Virginia’s Crime and Gun Violence Prevention Commission

Jaylin Drewry, a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., has been appointed Commissioner of the Crime and Gun Violence Prevention Commission in Portsmouth. At just 23 years old, he is the youngest chairman in the city’s history and the Hampton Roads area.

Drewry, a Norfolk State University graduate and former SGA president, previously gained national recognition in 2021 when he participated in the White House HBCU Covid-19 Roundtable, sponsored by Watch The Yard. His leadership experience as SGA President of Norfolk State University has now led him to tackle crime and gun violence in his hometown.

In addition to his role as Commissioner, Drewry serves as Director of Operations for SigmaPAC 1914, Phi Beta Sigma’s political action committee, and is a board member of the fraternity’s Governmental Affairs Board. His appointment proves yet again the significant impact of HBCU alumni in public service and community leadership.

Drewry expressed his commitment to the role, stating, “I’m honored to share that in April I was appointed to the City of Portsmouth’s inaugural Crime and Gun Violence Prevention Commission. As someone born and raised in Portsmouth, this mission is deeply personal to me. The epidemic of gun violence has touched my family too many times, with the loss of two cousins to senseless acts of violence in recent years.”

He highlighted the city’s urgent need for effective solutions, noting, “Within Virginia, more than 100% of communities have a lower crime rate than Portsmouth. Portsmouth is only safer than 2% of U.S. cities. This reality underscores the urgent need for effective & impactful solutions.”

Drewry emphasized the role of young leadership in addressing these issues, stating, “I firmly believe that it’s up to our younger generation to take the lead in addressing these issues. We need to craft innovative and impactful solutions that truly make a difference in our communities. I’m ready to work with community leaders and officials to create a safer Portsmouth and greater Hampton Roads area for all.” He also extended his gratitude to the Portsmouth City Council for their support.

Drewry’s commitment to addressing crime and gun violence in Portsmouth is deeply rooted in his personal experiences and passion for social change. He aims to bring innovative solutions and community-driven initiatives to reduce violence and foster a safer environment for residents.
