Pay it Forward: Trina Robertson – Cameron's%
A mother’s love, a son’s bravery, and a life and legacy that continues to inspire.
This week’s “Pay it Forward” honors a mother’s undying love and the unending support for her son.
Our story unfolds inside Chattanooga Pediatrics where we meet Crystal Franklin.
She tells me how she came to know the woman she nominated.
“We all just, we grew up together and I moved away in middle school and we kind of just lost connection.”
That’s until social media reunited her with her childhood friend, Trina Robertson.
“I seen it on Facebook that her son had got sick.”
Doctors diagnosed Cameron Scroggins with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in December of 2012, and Crystal, a mother now, too, connected to their heartache.
“I read they had Christmas early because he wanted his family to have a big Christmas and he passed away December 7th, 2013.”
Trina started a Facebook campaign called, “Cameron’s Cause.”
Crystal says, “It’s for people, for families that’s going through the same thing that she did. They’re just all around good people and she deserves it.”
We count out our “Pay it Forward” cash and send a text to Trina’s co-worker asking to please send her in.
Crystal whispers in anticipation, “My heart’s beating so fast!”
Then, there’s a knock at the door.
Trina walks into the room very surprised.
“Hi guys!”
Crystal explains, “I know you weren’t expecting me. I just wanted to tell you that you’re such an inspiration to me for everything you’ve been through. I would just like to say, on behalf of NewsChannel 9 and McMahan Law Firm, that I would like to “Pay it Forward” (with) $500.”
Trina hugs her friend and tearfully says, “Oh thank you so much! This means so much! We can do so much for the kids with this money!”
Trina wears a shirt that bears his name as she shares her son’s incredible story.
“He never gave up. Even on his last days he never gave up. He inspires me to keep going, so that maybe one day we can find a cure for this horrible, horrible disease.”
Cameron’s tenacity even touched the likes of country singer Justin Moore, who dedicated a song at last year’s Riverbend Festival to the Gordon Lee High School athlete.
In front of thousands of fans Moore told the crowd, “This song goes out to Cameron. This song’s called “Southern Boy.”
And, like the words to a favorite song, Trina recalls his final wish.
“Cameron said, “Mommy, when I’m done I want to start a foundation, so we can help, so we can “Pay it Forward.”
