Outdoor Activities for Kids at Home

I don’t know about your kids but mine absolutely love to be outside. They are literally taking any chance they get to soak up the sun. Summer time is the perfect season for planning all the fun things with your kids. As a work from home mom, I’m constantly searching for outdoor activities for kids at home and things that we can do together. Creating those memories together is really priceless. If you’re wanting to get outside more often or just need a few ideas for outdoor activities for kids, these are some of my family’s favorite activities.

1. Read some new books

My kids absolutely love to read. We’re at the library a few times a week checking out new books and if there’s something that we really love you can guarantee we’re adding it to our bookshelf. We try our hardest to avoid the summer slide and reading new books is a great way to do that. T loves to read multiple chapter books at once and these DIY bookmarks always help her keep her place. Search for a little free library near your neighborhood where you can find and exchange books with other readers.

2. Try making a new kid friendly recipe

Cooking together is the perfect opportunity to create priceless memories. Kids can practice their math skills using measurements and their science skills when combining ingredients. Reading the recipes can help them brush up on their reading. There are tons of recipes that my kids and I love making together. Pepperoni pizza bites and pop tarts are definitely at the top of the list. Keeping the recipes simple and the ingredients list small is key. Take it up a notch and take things outside by cooking your recipe on the grill while getting in some outdoor playing time.

3. Start a garden

A garden is the absolute perfect opportunity to learn about so many things at once. You can incorporate math, science and reading lessons into gardening. Kids really have fun getting outside and planting everything from flowers to fruits. You can pick different things to plant and experiment to learn what works best for your family. We started our garden small with green onions and went from there. Your garden doesn’t have to be large. Start small and grow from there.

4. Create a sensory play bin

Sensory bins are always a huge hit. Whether it’s water play or moon sand, kids love getting hands on and playing. I always take the sensory bins outside because things can definitely get messy.

5. Have a themed picnic

I love a good picnic. A fun twist on a traditional picnic is to have a theme. You can plan your entire picnic around a central theme. A theme can be anything from your favorite movie, inspired by a destination or even a person. Our most recent picnic was beach themed and it was perfect for the hot, sunny day outdoors. We DIY’d these fun corn hole boards and customized them with our Cricut Joy. The snacks and drinks for our picnic were beach themed. It was the perfect way for us to get out and enjoy each other.

6. Cozy up for a backyard movie night

One of my absolute favorite outdoor activities for kids is a backyard movie night. Movie nights are a tradition for us. We have at least one every week. When the weather is nice outdoors we create an entire backyard experience for our family. We set up the projector, big screen, a couple of chairs, grab some snacks and have the ultimate backyard movie night.

Super Simple Corn Hole DIY

This corn hole DIY is super easy. I’m just a matter of minutes you’ll have a customized corn hole board that your family will love. It won’t break the bank and you don’t need any tools to get the job done. It really is as simple as choosing a design that you love and applying it to your board.

You’ll need a few supplies to get started on this project but if you’re already a Cricut owner, you’re one step ahead of the game. I used my Cricut Joy for this project but you can use any Cricut machine that you have will work for this. The great thing about using the Joy is that it allows you to make longer cuts so if you’re opting for a design that’s the length of your board, it’s definitely the way to go. Plus the Cricut Joy allows you to use new Smart materials that make crafting and creating so much easier.

• Cut your design using your Cricut Joy. 
• Weed the design
• Use transfer tape to transfer the image onto the corn hole board.
