NPR Tiny Desk Contest – Didn’t Wanna Want You By Mark Taylor-Canfield
This song is my entry for the National Public Radio Tiny Desk Concert Contest. I wrote a rock song because I live in a city inspired by rock and roll. I moved to Seattle for the music!
Bob Boilen started this Tiny Desk Concert tradition when he began hosting concerts at his desk in the building where he worked on the All Songs Considered program for NPR.
My music video “Mother Freedom” is dedicated to people struggling for freedom & justice around the world:

I’ve been influenced by many Seattle artists including The Sonics
(not the NBA team – the band!), Jimi Hendrix, The Melvins, Critter’s Buggin’,
Young Fresh Fellows, The Black Tones, Shaina Shepherd, etc.
Seattle audiences love music and they want to see live bands, so the music venues are usually full of enthusiastic fans. It’s nice to know that the rock music scene is flourishing in my city.
I have also been inspired by legendary performers like Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, James Brown, and Ray Charles. Growing up in the USA one can’t really avoid their influence on pop culture and they all performed onstage in my city.
I also love the old school punk bands and the cool British Pop Invasion bands form the 1960’s.
As musicians we all stand on the shoulders of giants who inspired us to create music. They are the foundation upon which we stand. Without the blues and gospel music rock and roll would never have been born.
We all want to contribute to that rich cultural mix with our own original sounds. Each one of us adds our own special twist to the recipe, but we are following in the footsteps of true geniuses and legendary musical heroes. Fresh new bands in Seattle learned their chops by listening to the masters. We owe a huge debt to the fearless pioneers who blazed these trails for us to follow.
I’ve composed and performed multiple genres of music from classical to computer generated sounds in an academic setting but I’ve always loved rock and roll. I love the enthusiastic energy and the funky groove that makes you want to get up and dance! I appreciate it’s rebellious, confident spirit.
My Bio:
The United Nations has declared May 3rd World Press Freedom Day with major conferences and summits worldwide. As an advocate for freedom of the press I participated in some of these events, including a Summit For Democracy conference held at The Hague, Netherlands where I presented information on press freedom in the United States and the media monopolies which dominate news media markets.
I am sometimes referred to as the “Rock and Roll Journalist”.
I perform original rock music with my band in Seattle.
Didn’t Really Wanna Want You
By Mark Taylor-Canfield
I didn’t really wanna want you
I didn’t really wanna care
I didn’t really wanna want you
Or take those ribbons from your hair
I didn’t really wanna want you baby
So how come you had to want me?
I didn’t really wanna be there
With your mother and your dog
I didn’t really want to be there
In that San Francisco fog
I didn’t really wanna want you baby
So how come you had to want me?
I wanna buy her a diamond ring
“Cause you know in the middle the girl can sing
You should a heard her singing all night long
Singing her gypsy song
I didn’t really wanna want you
I didn’t really wanna care
I didn’t really wanna want you
Or take those ribbons from your hair
I didn’t really wanna want you baby
So how come you had to want me?
