NPR. PBS. And What’s at Stake for Our Communities. | Rich’s Weekly Reflection | Week 4
This week, I’ve been thinking about the funding cuts to public media.
At first glance, we might think this is just about NPR and PBS—two important national institutions. But here’s what else we need to know: this funding keeps local public stations alive.
In rural areas and poor communities—places I work in every day—these stations are often the only trusted source of news and connection.
Yes, there’s work to be done. More voices need to be heard. More communities need to be seen. But slashing this support? That’s not the way forward.
Let’s have the debate. But let’s not take a slash-and-burn approach.
Let’s be smarter than that.
Because if we’re serious about ensuring every community can thrive, then every community needs public media.
We are meant to go together—and that includes the places too often left behind. Let’s talk about this with each other. Let’s be agents of hope. Let’s forge a new civic path together.
