The Council of Presidents of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), an organization representing nine historically Black Greek-lettered fraternities and sororities, issued a joint statement on Tuesday condemning efforts to censor or defund the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), calling such actions a threat to the integrity of the nation’s historical narrative.

Speaking on behalf of more than 2.5 million members globally, the NPHC criticized attempts to “censor, distort, or dismantle the telling of America’s full and inclusive history.” The statement emphasized the importance of sustained funding for institutions within the Smithsonian complex, particularly the NMAAHC, which the group described as a “vital educational resource” and a cornerstone of national memory.

“From slavery to civil rights to the cultural innovations that continue to shape the world, the museum ensures these stories are not forgotten, denied, or politicized,” the Council stated.

The statement also included praise for Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch III, founding director of the museum and the first African American Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. The Council commended Bunch’s commitment to accessibility, equity, and education, noting that his leadership has “elevated the Smithsonian mission and broadened its relevance to all Americans.”

The NPHC, which was founded at Howard University in 1930, promotes collective action among its member organizations to address “matters of mutual concern.” The Council noted that Secretary Bunch’s leadership reflects its own mission to “foster cooperative actions” and strengthen democratic values through education and empowerment.

“We must support institutions that honor our collective past and protect our shared future,” the Council said. “The National Museum of African American History and Culture plays a vital role in that mission, and we will continue to advocate for its preservation and advancement.”

The statement concluded with a call to policymakers, educators, and citizens to reject efforts to divide the country through misinformation, urging them to uphold institutions committed to truth and unity.
