The Haitian-Japanese tennis player has had a great 2021 so far, winning the Australian Open final after beating her idol and tennis legend Serena Williams in the semifinals, as Blavity previously reported.
Williams has lauded Osaka for taking over the tennis world even while losing a number of very close matches to her in recent years.
At just 23, she already has four grand slam championships to her name, vaulting her into rarified air within the tennis world.
As Blavity previously reported, she became a part-owner of the North Carolina Courage, a National Women’s Soccer League in January after winning 2020 Sports Illustrated Sportspersons of the Year for her social justice activism and Associated Press Athlete of The Year.
She made waves last year for wearing face masks with the names of Breonna Taylor, Elijah McClain, Ahmaud Arbery and many others killed by police or racist violence.
“[W]atching the police injustices like George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Jacob Blake (to name just a few) in the summer broke my heart. I am proud of my U.S. Open victory, but more so that I got people talking about the real issues,” Osaka wrote in an email interview last year.
