Miami Gardens Honors Phi Beta Sigma with ‘Phi Beta Sigma Way’ Street Renaming
History was made on Dec. 19 as the City of Miami Gardens officially renamed a portion of Northwest 191st Street to “Phi Beta Sigma Way,” honoring the fraternity and its Rho Sigma Chapter for their dedication to service, leadership, and community development.
The ceremony, held at Dr. Lester Brown Park, marked the culmination of efforts led by Councilmember Reggie Leon, a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., who according to the The Miami Times sponsored the resolution passed by the city council on Oct. 23, 2024.
The renamed street, spanning Northwest 29th Avenue to 32nd Avenue, stands as a permanent tribute to the impact of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
“We’re making history right now,” said Marcelin Fils-Aime, president of the Rho Sigma Chapter, in remarks to The Miami Times. “We’re documenting this moment so that 40 years from now, when somebody arrives by that street and wonders why it was named ‘Phi Beta Sigma Way,’ they will know the impact we had on the community.”
The event brought together fraternity members, city officials, and community leaders to celebrate the fraternity’s legacy and its enduring contributions to Miami Gardens. The renaming is a milestone not only for the Rho Sigma Chapter but for the entire fraternity, highlighting its mission of uplifting communities through service and leadership.
