Mexico Travel Warnings Exposed: Why the News Paint Black & Brown Countries as Dangerous

They say Mexico is too dangerous for tourists — especially if you’re traveling solo or in a group of women. But here’s the truth: most of what you hear in the headlines doesn’t reflect the actual experience of travelers who look like us.

I’ve been to over 65 countries, including multiple cities across Mexico, and I’m breaking down what’s safe, what’s not, and why the U.S. media often gets Black and Brown destinations completely wrong. In this video, I’ll share the safest places to visit in Mexico, the cities you should avoid right now, and the safety tools I never travel without.

✅ Safest Cities in Mexico to Visit:
These cities have strong tourist infrastructure, a visible police presence, and are generally considered safe for travelers when you take proper precautions:

Merida – Known as the safest city in Mexico with a low crime rate

Puerto Vallarta – LGBTQ+ friendly, great for solo and group travel

San Miguel de Allende – A UNESCO World Heritage site with a peaceful vibe

Mexico City (CDMX) – Certain neighborhoods like Polanco and Roma are safe and full of culture

Playa del Carmen – Easygoing, walkable, and patrolled

Cancun (Hotel Zone) – Protected and secure, especially in tourist corridors

Tulum – Beautiful and mostly safe when you stay aware and avoid isolated areas late at night

⚠️ Cities to Avoid Right Now:
Based on current travel advisories and crime statistics, avoid or use extreme caution when traveling to:

Colima – High homicide rate and active cartel presence

Guerrero (including Acapulco) – Once popular, now unpredictable and unsafe

Zacatecas – Experiencing spikes in violence

Tamaulipas – Not recommended due to kidnappings and carjackings

Parts of Sinaloa – Linked to cartel operations and instability

Michoacán – Rich in culture but currently not worth the risk
