The Grammy Awards were a success for Megan Thee Stallion, who made the most of her first trip to the vaunted ceremony on Sunday afternoon and left with three trophies, according to Billboard and USA Today. 

The beloved 26-year-old rap star secured Grammys for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song from her hit “Savage (Remix)” featuring Beyoncé Knowles-Carter while also getting the award for Best New Artist. 

Her Best New Artist win was particularly notable as it’s the first time a female rapper has won the award since Lauryn Hill in 1999. And according to CNN, Megan Thee Stallion and Beyoncé are the first pair of women to win Best Rap Performance.

In a statement on Twitter, Megan Thee Stallion said the award show was one she and her late mother talked about often.

“I’m so excited. Sometimes I’m in disbelief. I cannot believe I’m this girl from Houston who really made it. Me and my mom used to always talk about me being at the Grammys, and she’d tell me that I’m going to win a Grammy. And I’d always be thinking, that’s so far away that’s so farfetched. To actually be here, I’m like, you know what, I’m gonna make Houston and my family proud. We hea! Thank you, Beyoncé. Hotties, I love y’all!” she told the audience.

“H-Town, we got another one! Shout out to all the other artists who were nominated for this category. Y’all are amazing. Thank you again for the endless support and like I always say, it’s only up from here. Real hot girl shit!” she added. 

She later wrote on Instagram, “Tonight was magic 🏆 3 X GRAMMY AWARD WINNING HOT GIRL.”

“I don’t want to cry. It’s been a hell of a year, but we made it. Secondly, I really just want to thank God because thank you for putting life into my body for me to be able to even be here today. I want to say thank you for always being with me, being by my side,” she said after winning the Best New Artist award.

“I want to say thank you to everybody at 300 for believing in me, sticking by me through my craziness and you know, it’s been a hell of a year but we made it. Thank you everybody at Roc Nation, and I really want to say thank you to my mama, she’s not here with me today but I know she is here with me in spirit and she always believed I could do it, so thank you all so much,” she added, according to Variety. 

On her way to accept the award, Meg gave a big hug to fellow artist Lizzo who presented her with the award. She beat out Ingrid Andress, Phoebe Bridgers, Chika, Noah Cyrus, D Smoke, Doja Cat and Kaytranada for the trophy. 

Hill, Chance the Rapper and group Arrested Development are the only hip-hop acts to ever win the award, according to The New York Times. 

The win for “Savage (Remix)” also helped Beyoncé break the record for most Grammy wins. In addition to her hit with Megan Thee Stallion, the superstar won two other awards for best R&B performance and best music video, putting her at 28 overall wins at the event, a new record.
