Lifetime Sets ‘Mary J. Blige Presents Be Happy’ With Tisha Campbell, Mekhi Phifer And Russell Hornsby As Singer Extends Deal

Mary J. Blige is continuing her relationship with Lifetime, bringing Gabourey Sidibe and Tisha Campbell on board.

Lifetime announced that the singer/performer has extended her deal to executive produce with the network, paving the way for three new original films. The first film under the extension, Mary J. Blige Presents Be Happy, premieres next month as part of the network’s Love of a Lifetime movie slate.

The film is a collaboration between Blige’s production company Blue Butterfly Productions and Mona Scott-Young’s Monami Productions. The film is also produced in association with Motion Entertainment and Swirl Films. Gabourey Sidibe also makes her directorial debut, working from a script by Cameron J. Ross.

Starring Tisha Campbell, Mekhi Phifer and Russell Hornsby, Mary J. Blige Presents Be Happy tells the story of a 50-year-old woman who goes on a trip to rediscover herself. She is quickly faced with tough choices when it comes to her happiness.

What will ‘Mary J. Blige Presents Happy’ be about?

Here’s more about the film:

Mary J. Blige Presents Be Happy follows 50-year-old Val (Campbell), a devoted wife and stay at home mom, who is eager to reignite the spark in her marriage when her youngest child leaves for college. Grappling with empty-nest feelings, loneliness and growing emotional distance from her husband Ross (Hornsby), Val begins to realize that her marriage and the woman she once was, may be slipping away. A spontaneous escape to New Orleans to support her pregnant daughter, Kayla (Zing Ashford), awakens long-buried dreams and passions and introduces her to Peter Mosley (Phifer), a handsome and charismatic photographer who sees her in ways she has forgotten to see herself.  Reawakening her artistic spirit and rediscovering her worth, Val must face a life-altering question: is it ever too late to choose yourself and the love you truly deserve?

Blige executive produces with Bruce Miller and Milana Edwards Brooks as co-producers. Scott-Young and Angela White produce, with Monami Productions’ Nick Roses, Mycahel G. Chinn, Stephanie R. Gayle and Michael Lang executive producing. Motion Entertainment’s Chet Fenster also executive produces with Swirl Films’ Eric Tomosunas.

Blige’s prior films with Lifetime include the trilogy Mary J. Blige’s Real Love, Mary J. Blige’s Strength of a Woman and Mary J. Blige’s Family Affair. All three films starred Ajiona Alexus and Da’Vinchi as a couple in various stages of their relationship.

When does the film premiere?

Mary J. Blige Presents Be Happy premieres Feb. 7 on Lifetime.
