In an effort to highlight the people who are leading colleges and universities across the nation, we at Watch The Yard reached out to UCLA and did an interview with Carl King Jr. the 2022-2023 Student Government Association president.

The position of SGA president is a highly respected role and there is a special pride that one takes in being elected by their peers to lead. King, who is majoring in Business Economics, is from Albany, Georgia and a U.S. Marine.

We interviewed Carl King Jr., and talked to him about his position, goals, future and what it means to hold this type of leadership position in 2022-2023.

What is the biggest thing you’ve learned as an SGA president so far?

I’ve learned that relationships are important in order to make things happen. I will carry this lesson with me as I intend to continue service at different levels in the future

What made you decide to attend UCLA for undergrad?

I wanted to attend UCLA because it’s the top public university in the nation.

How has UCLA molded you into the person you are today?

UCLA has allowed me to be around some of the most intelligent and hardworking individuals in America. Being around this group pushes me to strive better especially while serving in this leadership position.

What specific initiatives have you headed up this year (or are planning) and how do you think they will improve the school and surrounding community?

My platforms are CarlCARES which stands for Community Unity. Affordability, Revitalizing Campus Safety, Equitable Learning and Social Engagement. These initiatives are centered around reducing and addressing problems UCLA students face because of local and national economic and social issues.

How is your SGA administration/school currently working on attending to the mental health of students?

My mental health platforms are currently working with other student leaders on campus to create a peer support program. I am also working with our mental health clinic to get more diverse staff members within the mental health clinic on campus.

What does leadership mean to you?

Firstly in order to be a leader, you must be different. Leadership also means selfless service to those to your left and right. You don’t have to be in an official position to be a leader.

We now live in a digital world, what do you think schools need to do to represent themselves online in 2022/2023?

I think my school needs to continue to use social media to reach out to the younger generation and build an inclusive and engaging online appearance.

Why do you think Watch The Yard is important to Black students and college culture?

Watch the Yard of important to black students and college culture because it allows black college students all over the US to be connected socially. This brand also allows students to see the great things other black students are doing nationally.

What do you plan on doing after graduation?

My ultimate plans revolve continuing service in the U.S. Marines and attending Law School.
