The position of SGA president is a highly respected role and there is a special pride that one takes in being elected by their peers to lead. Mars, who is majoring in Psychology, is from Natchez MS. She is a proud Spring 2022 initiate of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

We interviewed Mars, and talked to her about her position, goals, future and what it means to hold this type of leadership position in 2023-2024.

Read the full interview below.

What is the biggest thing you’ve learned as an SGA president so far?

The biggest thing I’ve learned thus far is that great leaders create other great leaders. Under my leadership and mentorship, I have had the honor to help others reach their goals and build new connections as well.

What made you decide to attend Philander Smith University for undergrad?

I got the opportunity of a lifetime to obtain a undergrad degree debt free.

How has Philander Smith University molded you into the person you are today?

Philander Smith University has molded my character for the world ahead day by day through the implementation of our 7 Timeless Human Values. Respect for self, Respect for Others, Respect for PSU, Leadership, Scholarship, Spirituality, and service.

What specific initiatives have you headed up this year (or are planning) and how do you think they will improve the school and surrounding community?

My mission is to create traditional HBCU culture within our community by making sure that students have a growing relationship with one another. This year during Spring Fest the Student Government Association is hosting battle of the classes. This will give each class time to bond with one another through teamwork .

How is your SGA administration/school currently working on attending to the mental health of students?

The mental health of students is being addressed by hiring several mental health professionals who offer in-person and telehealth services.

What does leadership mean to you?

Leadership to me means effective executing authenticity, empathy, and adaptivity.

We now live in a digital world, what do you think schools need to do to represent themselves online in 2023/2024?

I think that every school should select student that are gifted is visual arts to serve as campus ambassadors and social media coordinators. These students would help to ensure the school is up to date with current trends.

Why do you think Watch The Yard is important to Black students and college culture?

I think Watch The Yard is so important because of its influence and how it emphasizes the importance of culture on HBCU campuses across the world .

What do you plan on doing after graduation?

I plan on obtaining my masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

We at Watch The Yard would like to commend Savana Mars for her work as the SGA president of Philander Smith University.
