In an effort to highlight the people who are leading colleges and universities across the nation, we at Watch The Yard reached out to Miles College and did an interview with Caleb Moore the 2023-2024 Student Government Association president.

The position of SGA president is a highly respected role and there is a special pride that one takes in being elected by their peers to lead. Moore, who is majoring in Political Science, is from Nashville. He is a proud Fall 2021 initiate of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

We interviewed Caleb Moore, and talked to him about his position, goals, future and what it means to hold this type of leadership position in 2023-2024.

What is the biggest thing you’ve learned as an SGA president so far?

As SGA president, the biggest lesson I’ve learned is the power of effective communication. Whether it’s listening to student voices, articulating our initiatives to faculty and administrators, or facilitating collaboration among different groups, clear communication has been essential in driving positive change and fostering a sense of unity within our campus community.

What made you decide to attend Miles College for undergrad?

I chose Miles College for my undergraduate studies because of its strong academic programs, supportive community, and commitment to empowering students from diverse backgrounds. The college’s focus on academic excellence, along with its vibrant campus life and opportunities for personal and professional growth, made it the perfect fit for me to pursue my goals and thrive academically and socially.

How has Miles College molded you into the person you are today?

Miles College has played a significant role in shaping me into the person I am today. Through its rigorous academic programs, supportive faculty, and diverse community, I’ve developed critical thinking skills, leadership abilities, and a strong sense of cultural awareness. The opportunities for involvement in extracurricular activities, service projects, and internships have helped me grow both personally and professionally, instilling in me values of perseverance, integrity, and empathy. Overall, my experience at Miles College has equipped me with the tools and confidence to navigate the complexities of the world and make a positive impact in my community.

What specific initiatives have you headed up this year (or are planning) and how do you think they will improve the school and surrounding community?

One initiative at Miles College that has provided students with food is the Bear Bucks program. Through this program, students are allocated a certain amount of Bear Bucks, which can be used to purchase meals at campus dining facilities and participating off-campus restaurants and vendors. This initiative aims to address food insecurity among students by providing them with a convenient and accessible way to access nutritious meals regardless of their financial circumstances. Overall, this initiative plays a crucial role in ensuring that all students have access to the food they need to thrive academically and personally during their time at Miles College.

How is your SGA administration/school currently working on attending to the mental health of students?

We have increased access to counseling services on campus such as access to TimelyMD, providing students with confidential support from licensed professionals. This includes individual counseling sessions, group therapy, and crisis intervention services.

What does leadership mean to you?

To me, leadership is about inspiring and empowering others to achieve common goals through vision, integrity, and collaboration. It involves guiding and supporting individuals or teams to reach their full potential while fostering a culture of trust, respect, and innovation. A true leader leads by example, listens attentively, communicates effectively, and embraces diversity of thought and perspective. Leadership is not about authority or control but rather about serving others and creating positive change for the greater good.

We now live in a digital world, what do you think schools need to do to represent themselves online in 2023/2024?

Offering virtual campus tours and online information sessions allows prospective students to explore the campus and learn about the school’s offerings from anywhere in the world.

Why do you think Watch The Yard is important to Black students and college culture?

Watch The Yard plays a significant role in Black students’ college culture by serving as a platform for celebration, empowerment, and community building. Overall, Watch The Yard is important to Black students and college culture because it celebrates Black excellence, empowers students, fosters community, and advocates for positive change, ultimately contributing to the enrichment and advancement of the Black college experience.

What do you plan on doing after graduation?

After graduation I plan to attend grad school and major in Higher Administration In Education.
