In an effort to highlight the people who are leading colleges and universities across the nation, we at Watch The Yard reached out to Bethune-Cookman University and did an interview with Wilbert Stubbs the 2022-2023 Student Government Association president.

The position of SGA president is a highly respected role and there is a special pride that one takes in being elected by their peers to lead. Stubbs, who is majoring in Mass Communications, is from Freeport, The Bahamas. He is a proud Spring 2021 initiate of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

We interviewed Wilbert Stubbs, and talked to him about his position, goals, future and what it means to hold this type of leadership position in 2022-2023.

What is the biggest thing you’ve learned as an SGA president so far?

The biggest lesson I learned was to never lose sight or the common touch.

What made you decide to attend Bethune-Cookman University for undergrad?

I had family members that went to the university so I decided to continue that legacy.

How has Bethune-Cookman University molded you into the person you are today?

It has definitely provided the opportunity to network at the university with both alumni and current students alike who are doing well in their field.

What specific initiatives have you headed up this year (or are planning) and how do you think they will improve the school and surrounding community?

I plan to execute scholarship funding for students that exemplify the value of Bethune-Cookman. This can range from a first semester freshman to a graduating senior to help with expenses.

How is your SGA administration/school currently working on attending to the mental health of students?

We try to promote our wellness day as well as taking break in between classes digress

What does leadership mean to you?

Leaders are one who know the way goes the way and show the way.

We now live in a digital world, what do you think schools need to do to represent themselves online in 2022/2023?

Utilize the latest social media trends and keep up the date with the latest news in HBCU culture.

Why do you think Watch The Yard is important to Black students and college culture?

I believe it is important to the black students and college culture because it highlights the best in black excellence.

What do you plan on doing after graduation?

I plan to work for a media company in Tampa and or Orlando
